Observations on the Daylily – in Wales

"Daylilies are hardy...and a very giving plant"  Here they are exposed to the weather conditions this area of Wales has to offer:

  • abundant spring rain -  over abundant to some but this is a vital component for the production of juicy fat flower buds
  • sometimes short, but wickedly intense summer heat and drought-like conditions that are becoming almost, the norm – this draws forth the luscious blooms that those so abundant rains have provided; which daylilies are renowned for and enthusiasts eagerly await
  • that combination of humidity and showers arriving in late summer and early autumn – what better to revitalise growth and allow the talents of the re-blooming varieties to really show off with an extra display
  • our extremes of winter – ah yes, well when it is extreme, what else is more adept at dealing naturally and defeating many, over-wintering pest problems

"Daylilies are hardy...and a very forgiving plant"  As there is no shelter here, they can and do, endure severe winter weather conditions , from snow to thaw and back again, glass breaking frost to thaw, and back again – and still reward with a breathtaking view of their summer beauty

Observations on the Daylily – a personal view

  • They can tolerate drought but are grateful for a refreshing  water; some actively relish being placed near boggy ground but if not watched, have a tendency to creep forward for a better look  and then find they are not as adept as the water lily. o
  • They can be tough; many of the older varieties are renowned for their ability to cling to the barest of soils but this will not suffice for a modern ‘blousy’ flower that is placed on the edge of a rockery or border and expected to face a force-9 gale.
  • They can be low maintenance and they look extremely attractive in colourful ceramic pots but if ‘on vacation’ with no provision for care they will be unable to draw water through clay and concrete when its holiday destination is a sunny patio.  They are pretty drought tolerant but not drought proof
  • Finally, they are versatile and will perform well with some shade, however if originally planted in a scenic display complementing various other perennials and shrubs, take care that in maturity the shrubs and other perennials have not taken over the avenue of sunshine , the flower bud and stem can only crane its neck so far in search of the light
